December 17, 2009

The eight-day holiday of Chanukah comes to a close on December 19th.

MenorahIn commemoration, menorahs are lit for eight days and are typically placed on display in window sills where they can tell their story to passersby.

And what story do they tell? First, they tell of the values of family and community, as the faces of those we love glow in the candlelight and feel warmed by its flame. They tell the stories of risk and rescue, dedication to ideals and devotion to others that make such celebrations possible.

Chanukah celebrates the victory of the priestly Maccabee family and heroic private citizens in their struggle against the powerful Greeks, who had conquered Jerusalem and the Temple in the 2nd century B.C.E. The victors succeeded in regaining the rights to choose their own government, to freely observe Judaism, and to rededicate their Holy Temple.

The ceremony of rededication called the “Chanukah” required lighting a candelabrum for eight days, but a miracle occurred: a tiny supply of uncontaminated oil, enough for a single day, lasted for all eight days.

DreidelsTo those of us at JCCA, who have the privilege of serving others, the candles tell a special story. They remind us of our mission to find the spark of uniqueness within all of our clients, even when they may have lost sight of it themselves. They remind us to illuminate the unsteady path toward dignity and self-reliance. And they remind us always to bear the torch of hope and possibility for children and their families.

Happy Holidays to you all, and a healthy, joyous, fulfilling year to those you love.

The Cottage Schools — Pleasantville Cottage School, Edenwald Center, and Pleasantville Diagnostic Center — are residential treatment programs of Jewish Child Care Association. We work with hundreds of abused and neglected inner city youth who need a safe and structured environment while they work to resolve their difficulties and build an independent future.

There is a $1 million gap between government funding and necessary expenses. This is why we need your help. Every dollar raised will go directly into programs to give help and hope to these young people throughout the year.

You can make a difference
