Donor Profile: Phyllis & Howard Schwartz
"The first time that JCCA ran its holiday benefit, A Tree Grows in Pleasantville, I went and brought a guest. At the event, a young African- American girl spoke. She looked at the audience, which was made up of families from the affluent areas of Westchester, and said, "I would never have believed that people like you could care about people like us." I have never forgotten that. Our children were raised with every advantage & good schools, a home in Westchester and summer camps- so I felt that I had to give to support this child who thought no one would care. The primary motivation for our giving is to support needed services to the neediest people. Most of all we want to relieve suffering."
"We chose the program that we would support because it was important to us personally. All of my experience was in the arts; I had worked at Lehman Center for the Arts and the Neuburger Museum, and my last job was as Executive Director of New York Women in Film and Television. When I heard JCCA was doing therapeutic arts in Pleasantville, I wanted to support it. Then, when I heard that New York City had slashed the budget and the program was in jeopardy, we stepped in to ensure that it would continue." Read more >
